Meet JT Doane

JT Doane, Republican, announced he is running for the Shelby County Commissioners South District seat. He is seasoned to municipal government, strategic planning, visionary planning, economic vitality, community development and result driven. Doane is prepared and ready to serve Shelby County!

JT and wife, Pamela are proud to call Shelby County their home. They have five adult children in their blended family. JT and Pamela attend Fair Haven Christian Church. Doane holds a Bachelor of Arts (2001) in Political Science from the University of Southern Indiana, where he was also a collegiate athlete with the Men’s Soccer Team. JT enjoys time with family and on the farm, riding 4-wheelers, deer hunting, walking trails, traveling, watching football and The Andy Griffith Show and listening to Johnny Cash.

Vision.

It is important to engage the public’s participation and feedback in developing planning initiatives. It is essential to develop innovative ways to communicate and share information to the public. While it is important to continue to honor our heritage, it is imperative to be investing in our future in a strategic, fiscally responsible manner. A plan without action is just a dream! Let us not dwell on yesterday, but plan for tomorrow, TODAY, and develop a vision onward for the future!


Doane has sixeen years government experience with eight years at the local level. JT Doane is a consultant currently serving as Community Development Director, City of Delphi. Doane actively serves with the Main Street program. Doane is also serving as President, Delphi Rotary. Doane is a member of the Indiana Barn Foundation. Doane actively speaks and participates in events honoring our Veterans.

Role and Responsibilities

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is the executive and legislative body of county government. The three Commissioners are the custodians of the home rule of powers of the county. Counties have 3 Commissioners, one from each district in the county. They have the authority to pass ordinances in the following broad areas:

  • Controlling, maintaining and supervising county property including courthouses, jails and public offices.
  • Supervising construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and to provide for traffic control.
  • Developing Economic Development programs to attract and retain jobs in the county.
  • To grant vacation pay, sick leave, paid holidays and other similar benefits to county employees.
  • To administer elections in conjunction with the county election board.
  • To establish minimum housing standards.
  • Auditing and authorizing payments on behalf of the county.
  • To incorporate new towns and alter township boundary lines, on petition.
  • Receiving bids and authorizing contracts.
  • Exercising appointive powers including both the selection of members to fill positions on boards, commissions, and committees and appointments of certain department heads.
  • Planning and implementing strategies for solid waste handling as member of solid waste district boards.
